During biblical times, the only defense cities had were walls they built to protect them. In society today, the walls we build are invisible but just as strong. Our walls are to protect our families, feelings, hearts and lives from the people around us.
Matthew 24:10 tells us that one of the signs of Christ's return is: And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
My Wednesday night bible study was about being offended. I was reminded that the closer people are to you the greater the chance of being offended. So true. With age, I have learned to be less offended -- especially by words. The saying I heard long ago, "rise above it", has finally started to sink into my soul.
I have prayed asking God to make me as prophets of old. While they were not without offense to others, they were offended often. So, none of us are blameless, but all are human and fall short of the glory. The glory I used to seek was perfection. It does not exsist, so my prayers are to ensure I forgive the offenses of others and pray they forgive mine.
Josuah fought the battle at Jericho with out really fighting. He was told to march around the walls 7 times and on the 7th time around shout the victory of the Lord. He obeyed and the wall came tumbling down. How awesome is that?
Jesus was offended and suffered for us yet He cried out to God, "forgive them for they know not what they are doing" ... True forgiveness, mercy and unconditional love. Will we ever really understand what happened that day on Calvary? Will we ever understand agape love?
Proverbs 18:19 saysA brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city, And contentions are like the bars of a castle.
Father in Heaven, Help us to understand the love of Jesus. Show us how to love each other and less offended and more like Christ. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
